Construction Progress

Overview
The first Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is being built by Lockheed Martin at Marinette Marine, Co. in Marinette, WI. LCS is being built in a modular fashion, consistent with modern ship building. The ship has been divided into sections called module and each module is built from cutting steel or aluminum. The modules are put together or “erected” and this is where the ship comes together.

The second of two Rolls-Royce MT 30 gas turbine engines is landed onto a hull block of Freedom (LCS 1), the first Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The gas turbines - part of an innovative power plant that enables LCS to sustain sprint speeds well over 40 knots when lightly loaded - will remain wrapped in protective shrouding until later in the construction process to prevent damage.

Here, a portion of the aft section of the ship, where the water jets will be installed, is offloaded after its arrival at Marinette Marine from other partner Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, LA. Constructing the stern at Bollinger gave the team an opportunity to train the workforce at Bollinger on the LCS processes, and further demonstrates strength and the seamless capabilities across the Lockheed Martin team.

The Lockheed Martin LCS team lands the 57mm Mk110 gun on Freedom (LCS 1). The Mk 110 accurately fires automatic salvos of the highly lethal 57mm 3P ammunition at a firing rate of 220 rounds per minute, with a range of up to nine miles. The gun is lightweight and compact, with minimal deck penetration, and operates in remote or local control.
